Story Hour

Story Hour is a program filled with stories, rhymes, games, songs, crafts and more. Each week there is a different theme which is reflected in all aspects of the program, even in the show and tell. Children ages 3 to 5 years are introduced  to books and stories in a classroom like setting. Gross motor and fine motor skills are addressed in all the sessions.

Simple concepts such as letter and number recognition and a love of books are taught by Miss Leanne in a fun and creative way.

 

We ask that the caregivers to please remain in the library during the program.

 

This 8-week session is offered at both library locations from April 2- May 21. Please register, there is $16 fee.  There are spaces still available at both locations.

Tales for Two

TALES FOR TWO

A time for your child (20 months -3 years) and yourself/caregiver to come to the library and discover books, songs, felt board stories and more. This fantastic program, taught by Miss Leanne, explores all aspects of literacy in an entertaining  and imaginative manner.

 

The spring session runs on Tuesdays from April 1 - May 20th at the Fleming Library, 4996 Beam Street, Beamsville.

The fee is $10 for the 8-week session. Please register. There are spaces still available.

Spring Programs 2014

BABIES & BOOKS

Introduce your baby to stories, songs and finger plays. Miss Jennifer takes you and your baby (6-19 months) on an adventure of fun and magical times. Find out about teachable moments during this special program.

 This session is open to parents, caregivers, grandparents, aunts, uncles and babies beginning Mondays, 10-11am at the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library at 4080 John Charles Blvd. Vineland. The program runs from March 31 to May 12. There is a $12 fee for this 6-week session. Please register. There are still spaces available.

An Invitation to "A Taste of Our Town"

The Library Fundraising Group invites you to attend its signature event – "A Taste of Our Town", in support of the "Our Town, Our Time" Capital Campaign.



The event will be held on May 3, 2014, at the Twenty Valley Golf and Country Club, and will include a dinner and silent auction.



There will also be a dance, featuring the music of the George Lake Big Band from Toronto.

The title sponsor for our event is Hopkins I.D.A. Pharmacy from Vineland, in celebration of its 65 years serving the Town of Lincoln.



Tickets are $100 each, or a table of 8 for $750, and will be available shortly.

Cocktails will begin at 5:45 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.

Local History Talks

Celebrate Family Literacy Day on January 26 at the Lincoln Public Library in Beamsville with a very special guest.  Grace is a trained therapy dog who loves to listen to great stories. 

In order to accomodate Grace and her reading friends, it is necessary to set up an appointment between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m.

MEDIA RELEASE At a Special Meeting of Council held on December 10, 2012, Council awarded the Design-Build Request for Proposal for the Town of Lincoln Community Complex to Schilthuis Construction Inc. of Ancaster. Over the next week staff will work toward completion of a contract with Schilthuis. Once a contract is signed the Town will have completed another step toward attaining a Community Complex for the Town of Lincoln. Located in a large park setting on a section of the Beamsville Fairgrounds recently acquired by the Town, the new facility will house an arena and library as well as much needed community space. The Community Complex will have a total floor area of approximately 67,172 square feet – the ground level with approximately 51,163 square feet and the second level with approximately 16,019 square feet. The final design and assigned space will be completed over the next few months. To keep the project focused as it progresses, Council developed and adopted a vision statement and a basic set of project principles. The vision for the project is to construct a replacement arena and library, and a new community space within the new Northwest Neighbourhood Park. Principles established are used to ensure that the construction of this multipurpose facility will employ a smart design process to maximize the range of functions and inclusive space. It will be a “People Place” promoting community pride, participation and a sense of belonging while encouraging walkability and revitalization of the core. Pre-construction work will be undertaken in the new year with a view to breaking ground next spring. Partial funding for this $15,000,000 project will be provided by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities who has committed 33.3% of eligible costs. The remainder will come from long term financing and proceeds from a Capital Campaign. The Council is excited about the project and is very appreciative of the input received from a wide range of community groups to date. Mayor Hodgson said: “This is an important step toward achieving the completion of a People Place in the heart of the former Beamsville Fairgrounds. December Program Changes

Some programs at the Lincoln Public Library will not be meeting or have limited sessions this December.

The Seniors Wii will meet only Tuesday December 11 at 1:00 p.m.  In January, we will the regular 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.

The Chess Club and the Adult Book Club will not be meeting in December. The Chess Club starts again on January 9 and the Adult Book Group on January 17.

Harvest Happening on Saturday

A reminder that the Harvest Happening is talking place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in beautiful downtown Beamsville.

The Library will be hosting an author reading with young adult author Jean Rae Baxter from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. in the tent beside the library.

Harvest crafts for children will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in th tent.

There will be many other activities on King St. including a Farmers' Market, children's games, music, food and much more!

Harvest Happening coming back to Beamsville

The Fleming Library (Beamsville) of the Lincoln Public Library is participating in the third annual Harvest Happening on October 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Check out the Library events:

10:30 a.m. - Reading by young adult author Jean Rae Baxter - in the tent beside the library.  Her historical novels include a "Twist of Malice: and the "The Way Lies North". Following her career in education, she moved to Hamilton and writes fulltime.

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - Drop-in harvest craft in the tent.

The Beamsville BIA is busy preparing for its third annual Harvest Happening, returning Saturday, Oct. 27 with some classics and a few new twists.
For the first time, downtown Beamsville, from Mountain to Ontario Streets, will be shut down to vehicular traffic, allowing the festival to spread into King Street. There, dozens of vendors will be set up selling harvest-related items from fresh produce to pies and jams. There will be crafts and games for the kids, a scavenger hunt, pumpkin decorating, face painting and balloon animals. Buskers and musicians will take to King Street, performing for visitors of the festival. The Lincoln fire department will have one of its trucks on hands for the public to tour. “It’s a fun-filled day for children and adults,” said Diane Stephenson, volunteer. “It brings the community together.” That idea was the basis for the event, explained committee member Stephanie Johnston, who was event chair in its inaugrual run. “We wanted to get people downtown and give back to the community,” said Johnston.

There will plenty of giveaways during the Oct. 27 event — from hot chocolate and popcorn to balloon animals and loot bags for the kids. The highlight, said Stephenson, is the children’s costume parade through the downtown, which begins at 10 a.m. Hundreds of children dressed in their Halloween costumes parade from the library into the downtown and back to the library where there will be crafts and a reading by Jean Rae Baxter. Registration for the parade begins at 9:30 a.m.

Author Evening with John Lawrence Reynolds

Tickets are still available for the Lincoln Public Library's Fall Author Evening with John Lawrence Reynolds. 

John Lawrence Reynolds is an author of fiction and non-fiction books. A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada he was educated at Westdale Secondary School and McMaster University, where he graduated with degrees in English and Psychology.

After an extensive career in advertising, supplemented by sideline activities as a musician, photographer, film & video director and on-air radio host, his first book - a mystery titled The Man Who Murdered God - was published to critical acclaim in 1989. This was followed by a series of other mystery novels and a lengthy period of writing non-fiction books, including several ghost-writing projects.

He has won two Arthur Ellis awards for Best Mystery Novel, a National Business Book award, a National Magazine award, and been recognized by an Author's Award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Letters.

John lives in Burlington, Ontario with his wife Judy.

Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door.  The event will take place Monday October 15 at the Lincoln Centre, 4361 Central Ave. in Beamsville.  Doors open at 7:00 with refreshments and music provided by the Guitar Loft in Smithville.  The reading begins at 7:30.

The Lincoln Public Library will be having a BIG book sale during Ontario Library Week - October 15-20 in the meeting room at the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library in Vineland during open hours.  Help us clear out some of the wonderful donations and deleted books and other materials to make way for some great new items.  Only $1 per bag!  (Note that the sale will be closed if there is an event in the meeting room).

Meet our new Deputy Chief Executive Officer

In June, Lincoln Public Library welcomed Janice Coles as its new Deputy CEO. Janice has over twenty years’ experience in public libraries in Ontario, and has held positions at Wellington County Library, Kingston Frontenac Public Library, Niagara Falls Public Library and Hamilton Public Library.

The Chess Club at the Lincoln Public Library in Beamsville will run every Wednesday afternoon from 3-5 p.m. all through the summer.  All ages and abilities are welcome to attend.

Do you have a homework assignment or a project and
you cannot get to a branch of the Lincoln Public Library?
Don't worry, just log on to the library’s homepage at www.lincoln.library.on.ca and with your library card number and PIN and you can do your research from the comfort of your home. The Lincoln Public Library has online reference tools that cover every subject you are studying at all grade levels.

Grzimek’s Animal Life is a complete online zoological
compilation for those who want to know more about the
fascinating world of animals. Science and Technology
resources are available through the database Access Science
and Gale’s General Science Collection. If you are learning a
new language then check out the interactive database Mango
Languages. If you are studying Shakespeare
or any contemporary author, the Literature Resource
Centre has articles and biographies
on your favourite writer.

When starting your research it is always a good idea to
check out an encyclopaedia. Encyclopaedia Britannica and
World Book Encyclopaedia in English, French and Spanish will have the basic information you need.

These are just a sampling of the many online reference
tools that are available to you with your library card. What
was once locked in a library building on a reference shelf
is now available through your computer, giving you a reference
library in your home.

Tickets are now on sale for our next Author Evening which will be held Monday April 30, 7:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Centre Centre in Beamsville featuring Murray Brewster and Dorothy Turcotte.

Murray Brewster is a Niagara Region native and the author of 'The Savage War: the Untold Battles of Afghanistan. The author, a Canadian Press correspondent, includes first-hand commentary from Canadian troops who participated in the conflict, as well as stories from the Afghan people on whose land the war took place in an effort to give Canadians a fuller view of the war and its aftermath.

Dorothy Turcotte is a native of Hamilton, Ontario. She attended McMaster University, graduating with a degree in English. After working for 5 years at the radio station CKOC as a copywriter, she began to raise a family and started a successful career as a freelance writer. For many years, she wrote articles on infant and child care, then later on articles on travel, history, and other topics. She wrote a weekly column in the St. Catharines Standard for 15 years, and for 22 years has had a weekly column, Over the Coffee Cups, in The Grimsby Independent. Her column, A Small Drop of Ink, now appears in The Grimsby Lincoln News.

Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at both the Fleming (Beamsville) and Moses F. Rittenhouse (Vineland) locations.

The Adult Book Group has been cancelled. The the group will meet next May 17 at 1:30 at the Fleming Library in Beamville. The topic will be 'Trevel'.

Early Literacy Station

The Fleming (Beamsville) Library has just installed a new Early Literacy Station in the Children's area. Younger children are encouraged to use the touch screen to access a variety of entertaining educational programs.

Here is the schedule of events during the Beamsville BIA Harvest Happening around and in the library:

9:45 - 10:00 Children register for the Pied Piper costume parade in the tent set in the empty lot to the north of the library - Lions Club.
10:00 - 11:00 Parade starts at the library, heads down Mountain St. and makes its way around downtown
11:00 - 11:30 Parade ends back at the Lions tent at library & prizes and goodie bags are given out
11:30 - 12 :00 Musician Tony Antidormi performs for the children
12:00 - 12:30 Shannon Toth does a reading from her new picture book Creatures of the Night. A book sale and signing follows – Library
12:30 - 1:00 Marc Garneau will say a few words, take questions from the audience and will then be available to sign autographs – Library

All the events are free and registration is only required for the parade.

New Library Cards Are Here!

The Lincoln Public Library has changed the style of its library cards. We now offer colour plastic cards with a lovely view of a vineyard which was taken by James Wagner, one of the library's staff members. In addition, the cards come with 'mini cards' that can be attached to a keyring. This is very convenient, especially for those of you who come to the library during a walk without a purse or wallet.

If you have a library, you can replace your card with the new one for a cost of only $3.

Author Evening

Kindermusik Workshop

Children's Services Assistant Position Opening

The Lincoln Public Library has an opening for a part-time Children’s Services Assistant:

The Children’s Services Assistant is responsible for children’s services support including programs such as Books and Babies, school aged book clubs and summer programs as well as children’s collection development in conjunction with the Children’s Services Coordinator. The position also has responsibilities for ‘frontline services’ related to circulation, reference and reader advisory as a member of the public service team.

Experience working with children essential. Early Childhood Education Diploma or Library Techniques Diploma preferred. 50 hours on average biweekly including evenings and Saturdays. Must have transportation between the Beamsville and Vineland locations.

The Page Turners summer book club for Grades 4 to 6 has been cancelled due to lack of registration.

The special Wednesday programs for children have been sold out in Beamsville, but there are still spaces in Vineland.

Summer Program Registration

Registration for the 'Read to Me' program for preschoolers and the TD Summer Reading Club with the great 'Splash' theme for school aged children begins June 27. The Children's Department has planned a great activities this year with special 'Wacky Wednesday' programs.

The Library will also have the popular summer program for teens. The theme for this summer is 'Pirates'. Watch for the Pirates of the Caribbean movie marathon.

Goodbye Miss Gail

Gail McKitterick, Lincoln Public Library's Children's Services Assistant, is leaving to move to South Carolina. Over the past five years, Gail has spearheaded a number of interested programs, in particular the Book Chat and the Books and Cocoa Book Groups for children. She is going to be greatly missed by both patrons and staff alike.

The Library is having an Openhouse on Thursday May 19 from 10-5 in the meeting room of the Fleming Library, Beamsville. Please come and wish Miss Gail well in her new adventures.

Local History Talks Continue on Saturday

The second installment of the Lincoln Local History Talks will take place Saturday May 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Schoolhouse of the Jordan Museum. The topic is local schools. This week's talks will look at the Campden and Tintern Public Schools and Beamsville District Secondary School.
