Volunteer Opportunities at the Library

Looking for a volunteer job? Want one that will benefit the whole community? Come join the library's volunteer team!

We welcome high school students who need to complete community service hours and others who have some spare time to contribute to their Library.

March Break Program Update

The Multi-Cultural Food Fest and the Passport to Past programs at the Fleming (Beamsville) Library are now full. We are taking names for a waiting list in case of cancellations.

Both the Multi-Cultural Food Fest and Passport to the Past programs at the Moses F. Rittenhouse (Vineland) Library have been cancelled due to low registration.

There is still room in all the teen March Break programs.

New Fax and Colour Copy Services

The Lincoln Public Library is now offering fax and colour copy services at both the Fleming (Beamsville) and Moses F. Rittenhouse (Vineland) Libraries.

The cost for fax service is $1.50 for the first page and $1.00 for subsequent pages.

Colour copies cost $1.00 per page.

March Break Programs

The Lincoln Public Library will be offering two fantastic programs for children in Grade 1 and up.

Multi-Cultural Food Fest!

This March Break, cooking instructor Alba Siena will teach us how to make foods from around the world. We will enjoy Mexican tacos, Caribbean fresh fruit kabobs and St. Paddy’s Day mint chocolate shakes. We’ll listen to some tales from near and far and decorate our chef hats too!

Passport to the Past

Join us as we explore the cultural roots of the settlers to the Niagara region. Miss Sylvia from the Jordan Museum will help us experience the pioneer way of life with the stories, crafts and activities that the pioneers brought from their countries of origin.

Users fees for Grimsby and St. Catharines Residents

The Lincoln Public Library Board has approved an annual non-resident fee of $35 for St. Catharines and Grimsby residents beginning January 1, 2009.

This decision was made after the St. Catharines and Grimsby Public Library Boards turned down the Lincoln Public Library Board’s request for reciprocal or free borrowing for Lincoln residents at their libraries.

Residents of Grimsby and St. Catharines are encouraged to contact their ibraries to reconsider reciprocal borrowing with Lincoln.

Residents of West Lincoln will continue to receive free library privileges under a reciprocal borrowing agreement.

The Lincoln Public Library is adding an exciting new program to its lineup - Nintendo Wii!

The Library is planning on starting two bowling leagues in the new year - one for teens and one for seniors.

Service Disruption

There will be no Internet, online catalogue or circulation service at the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library (Vineland) on Saturday November 15 for computer changes. There will be a short disruption at the Fleming Library (Beamsville), but Internet, online catalogue and circulation service will be available most of the day.

Fall Children's Program Registration

It's time for Fall Children's Program registration!

Registration for the library's three preschool programs: Books and Babies, Tales for Twos and Story Hour begins September 22. The programs start October 1 to 3, depending on the program chosen and the location. The cost for each program is $16.00 for 8 weeks.

The after school book club programs: Books and Cocoa Club for Grades 1-3 begin and Bookchat for Grades 4-6 start up again in September. Books and Cocoa takes place the 2nd Monday of the month at Fleming. Bookchat is offered the 4th Monday of the month at Fleming. The cost is $1 per month to cover the costs of the snack.

The library wll be offering a new program starting in October for children aged for 4-8 and their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or older siblings. The Book Bug Club is a new family book club that not only promotes literacy and a love of books, but also nutures family connections. The Book Bug Club is scheduled for the first Tuesday evening of the month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Fleming. The cost is $20.00 for 8 sessions from October to May and includes a snack.

Laugh Out Loud at the Lincoln Public Library!

The theme of this year's TD Summer Reading Program is Laugh out Loud. The Lincoln Public Library will be offering a great line-up of summer activities for both preschool and school-aged children. There are even programs for teens.

We can help you place holds either at the library or on-line, and we can request the books you need from another library.

Summer Student Program Assistant Opening

The Library has an opening for a Summer Student Program Assistant. The Assistant will help plan and conduct the TD Summer Reading Program, help coordinate the reading reporting volunteers and assist with other library duties as required.

The Student must be returning to school and studying in the following areas: Library Science, Library Techniques, Education or Early Children Education.

The position begins the week of June 9 for 11 weeks. The rate of pay is $10 for a 35 hour week.

Deadline for applications is May 2o.

Lincoln Public Library’s new Slogan: Learn, Discover, Experience, Explore

The Lincoln Public Library recently held a community contest to find a slogan which would represent its mission and goals. The Library received twenty-three submissions from local residents. The Bout Family from Vineland created winning slogan: ‘Learn, Discover, Experience, Explore’.

“There is no limit to what you can learn about, discover and explore at the library”, stated Library Board Chair Jane Wright. “The slogan tells us exactly what our library offers to every one of us. There is something for every age and stage of our lives.”

The Bouts were awarded a $100 gift certificate from Chapters at the April 7, 2008 Town of Lincoln Council Meeting.

The slogan will be incorporated into all future correspondence and promotional materials.

The Adult Book Group will resume its meetings in April.

The Group will meet April 16, 7:00 p.m. at the Fleming Library.

Library's Strategic Plan

The Lincoln Public Library Board recently approved a new 2007-2010 Strategic Plan. The Plan includes the goals and directions for library service in Lincoln over the next three years.

Some of the key initiatives include enhanced communication to the general public, linkages to information providers, planning for a enhanced facility in Beamsville and specialized information services.

Moses F. Rittenhouse Library opens on Fridays

Beginning January 11, 2008, the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library will open Friday afternoons from 1-5 p.m. The Library Board made this decision based on the requests for Friday service that came from the 2006 Community Survey.

The Lincoln Public Library is continuing its search for a new slogan. We need a slogan which effectively blends the concept of the library’s vision and mission, history and place in the community into one concise phrase. Anyone 14 years of age or older is eligible to enter.

Winners win a $100 Chapters gift certificate. The slogan will be used by the library for all its marketing initiatives.

Lincoln Public Library celebrates Library Week with contests

The Lincoln Public Library will be holding two contests in October to celebrate Library Week, October 14-19.

The Lincoln Public Library needs a slogan which blends the concept of the library’s vision and mission, history and place in the community in an appealing and easy to understand way. Library patrons 14 and older are eligible to submit one original slogan. The winning slogan will be used on the library’s stationary, website, and in other publications. Persons interested in entering the slogan contest can pick up an entry form at either the Fleming or Rittenhouse Library, or download an entry form from our website. The deadline for entry is October 8, 2007 at 5:00 p.m.. The winner will be announced on October 19 and will win a $100 Chapters gift certificate.

Students in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 can participate in our bookmark contest. The Library is looking for original submissions which celebrate youth and libraries. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2, Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-8. Entry forms are available at both Library locations and can be downloaded from our website, The deadline for entry is October 8, 2007. Niagara Reads - October 17

The Adult Book Group is pleased to be hosting an author reading on Wednesday October 17 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m at the Fleming Library meeting room. The reading is part of the region-wide Niagara Reads program which takes place during the month of October, Canadian Library Month. The reading is open to the public, and there is free admission.

Kara Bartley, a Niagara Falls author and Vertebrate Paleontologist, will be presenting her fascinating thriller, The Siamese Mummy. The novel's central character is Jenna Matthews, a celebrated vertebrate paleontologist, returning home from a conference in Niagara Falls, who starts investigating the tale of sick animals and missing people in Kansas.

Diane Bisson, author of 'Tragedy, Truth & Triumph', will be sharing her touching and poignant message based on her horrific motorcycle accident in Sydney, Australia. Diane is a retired bilingual educator and Special Education Specialist with 35 years of teaching experience. Diane has also written, designed, and published a series of children's books.

The 2007 Historic Lecture series focuses on Beamsville. The lectures will take place in the Fleming (Beamsville) Library's meeting room from 10-11 a.m.

This fall, the Lincoln Public Library will be conducting a slogan and bookmark contest as part of this year's Ontario Library Week celebration.

Anyone 13 and over will be invited to create and submit a slogan which best represents what the Lincoln Public Library is all about. Children 12 and under will be invited to create a bookmark about the Library.

Lincoln Public Library receives recognition at the Ontario Library Association Conference

The Lincoln Public Library was recognized for its contributions to the library community at the Ontario Public Library Awards dinner on February 1 in Toronto.

The Library received its accreditation certificate from the Minister of Culture, Caroline di Cocco. To be accredited, the Lincoln Public Library met over 100 criteria through a peer evaluation.

Suzanne Culp, library board member for the past six years, received the James Bain Medallion for Trustee of the Year. She was recognized for her work with the Ontario Library Boards Association, the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries, in particular the Telling our Stories contest, and for her contribution to the Lincoln Public Library. We wish Sue well as she leaves the board to pursue new adventures!

February Adult Book Group

The Adult Book Group will next meet Feburary 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting Room of the Fleming Library (Beamsville). This month's topic is political fiction or non-fiction.

Library Cards Required

The Lincoln Public Library began a new policy on January 2 which requires library members to present their library card for all transactions, including materials checkout and using the Internet terminals.

Telling our Stories Contest

Submissions to the Telling our Stories contest will be accepted only until November 30. If you have a 'feel good' story about the Lincoln Public Library or libraries in general, we would like to read it! You can either submit your story online or bring it to the library and we will ensure that it is inputted. The top three stories will receive cash prizes ($1500 first place, $1000 second place and $500 third place) plus $250 will be donated in the name of the top 6 winners and the 10 runners-up to the libraries named in their entry forms. Everybody wins in this contest.

The date to rate entries has been entended until December 15. Lincoln already has two entries, and we would like to see more from our great customers.

Part-time Job Opening

The Lincoln Public Library is searching for a Part-time Circulation Assistant to work at both the Fleming (Beamsville) and Rittenhouse (Vineland) locations.

The position is responsible for circulation functions such as checking in and out library materials, issuing borrower cards and explaining circulation policies to patrons. Other duties include answering general information requests, shelf reading and assisting patrons on the public Internet computers.

The successful candidate will require a college diploma, customer service experience, working knowledge of computers and the Internet and a valid driver’s licence.

Library Board Trustee Applications

The Town of Lincoln will soon be advertising for interested applicants for the Lincoln Public Library Board.

A Board member must be at least eighteen (18) years old, a Canadian citizen and a resident of the Town of Lincoln who is not employed by the Board or the Town. Members hold office for a term concurrent with the term of the appointing council.The Library Board holds regular monthly meetings (except July and August), and there are also additional meetings for the Board's standing and ad hoc committees.

January Book Group

All Candidates Meeting

The Library Board posed two questions at the All Candidates meeting for the November 13 municipal election. Here are the questions and the answers from the candidates.

Question #1: The Fleming Library is exceedingly overcrowded. Would you support the building of a larger library facility in Beamsville?

Robert Condotta: We'd have to look at all the other needs and the costs involved and it's hard to say right now if the library would be on the list, but of course libraries are important.

Question # 2: Our public library serves as one of the finest public access information services in the world. How would you rank the library in importance among municipally funded services?

Jacqueline McPherson: It's an unfair question because I've always been a library supporter. Libraries are such an important resource no matter who you are or where you live. There's always one there. But I do agree that the Fleming Library is bursting at the seams and we do need a new library in Beamsville.

Telling Our Stories Contest

Telling Our Stories is a province-wide contest that highlights and celebrates the positive impact of Ontario public libraries. Beginning Ontario Public Library Week, from October 16, 2006, until November 30, 2006, the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries (FOPL) invites Ontarians to share their personal stories of how a public library has made a difference to them or their families.

The top three winning stories in both English and French will be awarded cash prizes (First prize $1,500; Second prize $1,000; Third prize $500) and will be featured in the media. In addition, a donation of $250 will be made in the name of the top three winners in both official languages and the top 10 combined English and French runners-up to the Ontario public library named in their entry forms.

To ensure high participation by Ontario residents, both for story submissions and public voting for their favourite stories, the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries has partnered with Ontario's educational media organization, TVO. TVO will promote the contest on air and encourage Ontarians to participate at tvo.org/tellingourstories.

Ontario's French-language educational broadcaster, TFO, is also promoting the contest on air and online. French language submissions can be made at tfo.org/racontonsnoshistoires.

Entries that meet contest criteria will be short-listed and then reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges. Stories will be entered into a searchable online database that is accessible through the contest website at tvo.org/tellingourstories and the public will be invited to vote online for their favourite entries. Short-listed stories will be published in a booklet to become part of a province-wide advocacy kit for use by public libraries at the local level.

Telling Our Stories is open to Ontario residents aged 18 or older. Stories must be no longer than 500 words in length and may be submitted online in English at tvo.org/tellingourstories or French at tfo.org/racontonsnoshistoires, or by fax or regular mail from October 16 until November 30, 2006 at midnight. The winners will be announced at the Ontario Library Association Super Conference in Toronto on January 31, 2007.

Ontario Public Library Week 2006

Celebrations for Ontario Public Library Week 2006 will be held from October 16th to 22nd. The theme, “Libraries: The world at your fingertips”, celebrates libraries of all types across Canada and the ability to access the world through the interconnectivity of libraries.
A strong library system is the cornerstone of a strong community. Ontario Public Library Week recognizes the important contribution Ontario's public libraries make to education, literacy and life-long learning in Ontario communities. With more than 1,100 service points throughout Ontario, public libraries’ patrons have access to over 100 million items and make over 66 million visits to local libraries across Ontario annually. And now virtually every library branch in the province also provides access to electronic information through the Internet.
Public libraries, dedicated librarians and devoted volunteers across the province are planning special activities to mark Ontario Public Library Week 2006. Check the Lincoln Public Library’s website, www.lincoln.library.on.ca, for events such as Bob Lindsey’s author reading on Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fleming Library.

October Book Group

Everyone is invited to October's Adult Book Group which will take place October 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room of the Fleming Library. Bob Lindsey, a Lincoln resident, will be reading from his book, Royal Spring. This reading is part of the Niagara Reads Niagara author initiative which takes place in all Niagara libraries in the month of October.

Following the reading, there will be a discussion of books by Niagara authors and books set in Niagara.

Community Survey

The Lincoln Public Library is conducting a community survey until November. The Library is requesting input from the community to determine current successes and future library needs. The survey is available in two formats: in print at either library location or online on our website at www.lincoln.library.on.ca.

Niagara Reads Niagara

The Lincoln Public Library is pleased to participate in the area's first Niagara Reads Niagara. All Niagara libraries are hosting author readings to highlight books written by local authors or about the Niagara area.

Lincoln Public Library is honoured to have Bob Lindsey read from his book, Royal Spring, on Wednesday October 18 at 7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Moses F. Rittenhouse Library Tenth Anniversary Celebration

Please check the Library's website for all the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library Tenth Anniversary activities. Highlights include the Speakers Series in September and October, the Openhouse on September 21 and the arrival of Moses F. Rittenhouse's desk that he used in his Chicago office.

Registration for the fall session of children's programs will start the week of September 18. Books and Babies registration begins on September 18 while registration for Tales for Twos and Preschool Storytime begins September 20.

TD Canada Trust Donation to Summer Reading Program

The Beamsville bank branch of the TD Canada Trust Bank has generously donated $500 to the Lincoln Public Library towards the final wrap up party of the TD Summer Reading Program.

A big thank you to them from all the children who are participating this summer.

Moses F. Rittenhouse Library Anniversary Quilt

As part of the celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library in Vineland, a commemorative quilt will be created. The public is invited to design a quilt block which will be incorporated into this very special quilt.

There will be five quilting sessions held in both Lincoln libraries during July and August:
Beamsville: Thursday, July 20th, 11a.m. – 12 p.m.; Wednesday, August 9th, 2 – 3 p.m.
Vineland: Tuesday, July 11th, 2 - 3 p.m. ; Tuesday, July 25th, 2 – 3 p.m. ; Tuesday, August 22, 2 – 3 p.m.

Sessions are open to people 7 years of age and up.

Summer Program Registration

Registration for Lincoln Public Library's Summer Program for children begins June 29 at both the Fleming and Moses F. Rittenhouse libraries.

Summer Student Volunteer Program

The Lincoln Public Library is seeking students between the ages of 12 and 15 to participate in our Summer Student Volunteer Program. Students can assist with the following summer programs: Summer Reading Program; Read to Me Program; Library Bingo and weekly programs.

Interested students can pick up an application form at the circulation desk and return it to either Library. Once your application has been received, we will contact you to discuss your placement.

Summer Hours Start

Starting June 1st, the Fleming Library closes at 8:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday instead of 9:00 p.m. The hours at the Moses F. Rittenhouse Library remain the same.

Smoke-Free Ontario Act

In accordance with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, smoking is prohibited at both Lincoln Public Library locations. Additionally, the Act also makes it illegal to smoke within 9-metres (@ 30 feet) of all library building entrances. Thank you for your cooperation.

June Book Group

2005 Annual Report

The Lincoln Public Library's 2005 Annual Report will be distributed to the community in the spring water and sewer billing. Please check out all the great things we did last year!

If you don't get a water and sewer bill, you can get a copy at either library in Beamsville or Vineland or at the Town Hall.
